Abstract

Recent research has indicated a significant mutual influence between food intake and emotional status. Mindfulness has also shown potential in supporting positive changes in dietary habits. In an attempt to improve individual awareness and mindfulness around eating behaviours, we propose to leverage information visualization to build digital profiles on food logging data associated with mood records. This paper presents EmovDiary, a two-level timeline representation featuring intuitive visual designs and its implementation as a web-based interactive interface enriched with dynamic animations that enable users to explore their logging data. We demonstrate through evaluations the effectiveness of our design in narrating personal food-and-mood journeys in addition to exploring particular eating patterns, such as comfort food for a specific agent. In the end, we discuss our findings on enhancing user engagement in logging a mindful eating dairy.
